Fox News has destroyed United States democracy for profit. Murdoch’s Australian arm Sky News is trying to do the same here, for profit.

Murdoch and his media empire are using fake statistics in an attempt to empower the Ginger Whinger, who in turn, will try and return Australia to a golden age 1950s. A golden age that never was.

Every election cycle, the same ritual: a party steps to the podium, armed not with argument but with statistics — numbers stripped of context, draped in authority, deployed as cudgels.

The technique is old. Benjamin Disraeli (or perhaps Mark Twain — the attribution is itself a small lesson in how false things circulate) gave us the taxonomy: lies, damned lies, and statistics. The genius of the third category is that it looks like the first two’s respectable cousin. A lie you can footnote.

Consider the sleight-of-hand with averages. A government boasts that average wages have risen. They have — because a banker’s bonus inflates the mean while the median worker earns less than last year. The statistic is accurate. The impression it creates is a fabrication.

Statistics are not neutral. Neither are the hands that select them.

There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics. WRONG! The worst kind of lies are the fourth kind. The Murdoch lies.
