This thoughtful analysis underscores a fundamental truth: the functioning of liberal democracy depends less on an abundance of facts than on a pervasive, often fragile, assumption of trust. When citizens believe that elected officials, journalists, experts and civil servants act with integrity, complex societies can delegate authority and coordinate collective action. When that assumption collapses—driven by scandals, technological disruption, concentrated elite networks, and the effective rhetoric of populist challengers—the legitimacy of institutions is rapidly undermined.

The essay rightly identifies that declining trust is not simply a byproduct of misinformation or economic dislocation; it is also a failure of institutions to recognise and repair the conditions that erode credibility. Transparency without accountability, homogenous networks that appear self-serving, and slow adaptation to digital realities have amplified suspicion. Equally important is the observation that successful anti?establishment actors often trade on exposure more than probity: distrust spreads faster than trust can be rebuilt.

Restoring a durable public faith requires more than repeating facts. It demands institutional humility, meaningful transparency, enforced ethical standards, and a demonstrable commitment to the common good. Diversifying decision?making networks, strengthening independent journalism and oversight, protecting rule of law, and making data genuinely accessible for public scrutiny are essential steps. At the same time, defenders of liberalism must acknowledge legitimate grievances and pursue reforms that reduce rent-seeking and inequality.

Ultimately, the challenge is to reforge the social architecture of trust: not by romanticising past certainties, but by rebuilding institutions that deserve—and can sustain—public confidence.

Without truth there is no society. Without society we have chaos. Alternative facts are lies. Lies undermine and destabilise society.
